Mapping the WCO Competency Framework

In 2024, the World Council of Optometry (WCO) published its “Competency Framework for Optometry”, marking a significant shift in how optometry education and professional practice are structured globally. This new framework moves away from the previous 4-levels model of optometry and outlines the roles and responsibilities of optometrists within the broader spectrum of eye care, building on the “Eye Care Competency Framework” previously published by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In this session, Brendan, optometrist and co-chair of ECOO’s Accreditation Agency, as well as a newly appointed member of the WCO Education Committee, will provide:

  • An overview of the recent WCO developments
  • Insights into what these changes mean for the optometry profession globally
  • Implications for the European Diploma in Optometry, historically anchored at level 3B in the former 4-levels model
